WMO/EMEP/UNEP Workshop on Modelling of Atmospheric Transport and Deposition of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Heavy Metals

WMO/GAW N 136, V.I; EMEP/MSC-E 1/2000

ABSTRACT

The Cooperative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-Range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe (EMEP) was established in 1978 under auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with the assistance of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). After the adoption of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) in Geneva on 13 November 1979 (E/ECE/1010) EMEP has been implemented under the Convention and its Protocols.

The main task of EMEP is to provide the UN ECE Governments and Parties to the Convention on LRTAP with regular information on past and predict emissions, concentrations and/or depositions of air pollutants and, in particular, on the quantity and significance of their long-range transport. Work under EMEP is crucial to setting the stage for negotiating protocols, laying out management options, and for assessing progress in reducing emissions. Its programme is implemented by the Parties together with the Chemical Coordinating Centre (Norway), the Meteorological Sythesizing Centre East (Russia) and the Meteorological Sythesizing Centre West (Norway) in close cooperation with WMO. Several scientific projects on the evaluation of atmospheric pollution in Europe carried out under EMEP were supported by WMO. A number of expert meetings on the assessment of the meteorological aspects of various phases of EMEP were organized by WMO and the reports of these meetings were published in the WMO Environmental Pollution Monitoring and Research Programme Report Series (e.g., No.3,10,24,48,65,116,117 and 133).

Outcome of the workshop will be presented to the Steering Body to EMEP to decide on the next steps of further EMEP activity in the field of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants long-range transport.

This report was published in two volumes: Volume I contains the report of the workshop, introductory presentations, background documents, conclusions and recommendations, abstracts. Volume II contains papers of poster presentations at the workshop.
