ABSTRACT

This report presents the results of the work fulfilled by Meteorological Synthesizing Centre East of EMEP (EMEP/MSC-E) in the framework of EMEP as a contribution to the German-Canadian Project "Quality of measuring data on atmospheric inputs of POPs". The study has been carried out under the Contract between MSC-E and Federal Environmental Agency of Germany (Umweltbundesamt, UBA).

The main objective of this study is to provide UBA with evaluation of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) and lindane (g-HCH) atmospheric transport from European and North American emission sources and assessment of deposition to the OSPAR regions.

Special attention is paid to the following topics:

1. Joint interpretation of modeling results and available measurements obtained at EMEP, OSPAR and German sites as well as at Canadian IADN (Great Lakes Region) and NAPS sites.

2. Evaluation of contamination (air concentrations and deposition fluxes) in European and OSPAR regions.

Given calculations at hemispheric and regional scales are performed by MSCE-POP model. Short description of the model is given in the report. The physical-chemical properties of pollutants used for modeling purposes are presented in Annex A.

The evaluation of pollution levels of the considered pollutants is made for 1999 and 2000 (regional scale) and for 2000 and 2002 (hemispheric scale).
