ABSTRACT

In this Note results of the current work on emissions carried out by MSC-E in collaboration with invited experts are presented.

The main directions of this activity are:
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission inventories and emission expert estimates;
Long-time series of heavy metal emissions for some European countries based on official data and expert estimates.

In the first part of the Note data on emission factors for PAH from the main source categories are summarized. The attention is concentrated on polyaromatic substances included in the CLRTAP Protocol on POPs: benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and indeno[123-cd]pyrene. Based on available emission factors and statistical data, emission expert estimates for substances listed above were prepared for 10 countries. These expert estimates were sent to countries for consideration and possible use in generation of official emission data.

The second part of the Technical note gives a review of the official emission data on Pb, Cd and Hg submitted by countries in 2000. Official data from countries, as a rule, are submitted for odd years thereby preventing from tracing trends over essential time periods. An attempt is made to reproduce long-time series of emission data beginning from 1980 to 1998 on the base of emission data of other pollutants. For this purpose emission data on SO2, NOx, CO2 available for a long period of time are considered. The analysis of data series made it possible to reveal some regularities and peculiarities of emission changes in countries. MSC-E is grateful in advance to experts and countries for their comments, additions and collaboration in this field.
