The first EMEP meeting on POP model intercomparison study

13-14 November 2002, Moscow, Russia

Introduction

POP model intercomparison study was started under EMEP in accordance with the recommendation of the Executive Body for the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution [ECE/EB.AIR/75].

The first meeting on the intercomparison of POP models based on the EMEP work-plan in 2002 was held in Moscow from 13 to 14 November 2002.

It was attended by 11 national experts from Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the USA and representatives of EMEP/MSC-E.

The main aim of the meeting was to consider and accept the Programme on POP model intercomparison study consisting of four stages; to discuss in depth the goal of the first stage and elaborate its time-schedule.

The draft Programme has been prepared by EMEP/MSC-E, taking into account discussion on POP model intercomparison issues of group of national experts during the third EMEP/TFMM meeting in Geneva, March 2002 [EB.AIR/GE.1/2002/4].

After discussion the Programme was accepted.

In the comparison models of different types are presented. Here are box models with different number of boxes and gridded models with different spatial coverage and resolution. These models take into account different environmental compartments and processes and differ by input and output information.

The first stage of the Programme

The participants agreed to compare model descriptions of main processes determining POP behaviour in the environment (degradation processes in different environmental compartments, processes of intermedia exchange, partitioning between various phases, etc.).

This stage can result in an intermediate report.

The second EMEP meeting on POP model intercomparison study will be held in Moscow in autumn 2003. It is planned to consider the results of Stage I and approve detailed work programme of Stage II.
