The Workshop on the Assessment of EMEP Activities Concerning Heavy Metals (HMs) and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Their Further Development held in Moscow from 24 to 26 September 1996 was convented in accordance with the decision of the Executive Body for the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (ECE/EB.AIR/46, November 1995) and goals of the 6-th phase of EMEP in the field of measurement and modelling of depositions and concentrations of HMs and POPs (EB.AIR/GE.1/24, Annex IV).

Workshop was organized by the State Committee on the Environmental Protection of the Russian Federation, the Meteorological Synthesizing Centre East (MSC-E) of EMEP together with the Chemical Co-ordinating Centre (CCC) of EMEP and co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The objective of the Workshop was an evaluation of the present state and futher development in the study of HMs and POPs transport in Europe accounting for the decisions of the Task Force on Heavy Metals and Persistent Organic Pollutants (EB.AIR/WG.6/R.21) , ECE Workshop on Emissions and Modelling of Atmospheric Transport of POPs and HMs (EB.AIR/WG.6/R.18, Durham, USA, 1993) and EMEP Workshop on European Monitoring, Modelling and Assessment of HMs and POPs (EB.AIR/GE.1/R.92, Beekbergen, the Netherlands, 1994).

The Workshop was attended by 61 experts from Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, MSC-E, CCC of EMEP and by representatives of the WMO, HELCOM and ECE Secretariat.
